Our initiative is to collect second-hand books, and donate them to prisons and family shelters to combat lack of access to books.
We are a non-profit organization formed of high-school students who hope to improve literacy rates, and to provide access to literacy resources, within the DMV area. We met in one of our joint classrooms, and discovered a mutual interest for both politics and literature. We believe in the power of words, which contain the capacity to do an incredible amount of good.
and more to go
Words are powerful. Words are revolutionary. Without readers, words are wasted.
We believe everyone deserves access to books. Our mission is to work towards this effort by donating to underprivileged communities. Nearly one percent of American adults are incarcerated; the highest rate in the world. However, many prisoners have little access to books or educational material. The need for literature is dire within prison. Similarly, access to books, within family shelters, provides both education and escapism for families who might otherwise not have access to resources for learning, or methods of healthy escapism.
Books such as Little Women (1868-1869) by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888), The Great Gatsby (1925) written by F Scott. Fitzgerald (1896-1940), and Fahrenheit 451 (1953) written by Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), and Invisible Man (1952) by Ralph Ellison (1914-1994) have changed the world with words alone.
